When we lived in Cameroon, we spent a lot of time in the car, skittling gun-weilding police at roadblocks, heading to the black sand beaches at Limbe or my French teacher’s beach hut in Kribi. A couple of hours in a 4×4 was a small price to pay to escape the largely oppressive city of Douala.

While driving, we’d listen to whatever was in our 6-disc CD changer. It was a schizophrenic soundtrack of modern opera and composition by John Adams and Philip Glass (his) and The Goo Goo Dolls and the Moulin Rouge soundtrack (mine). He wasn’t too keen on my picks, but I hated his more.

Oh God. The incessant hammering and yammering. The babbly librettos. By the time Nixon had left China, I was a prickly mess who would’ve gladly picked up a machete with malicious intent if my skeleton hadn’t already disintegrated in disgust. It was a loathing of the fingernail-down-blackboard visceral variety.

So, why ten-years later, did I agree go to Robert Wilson and Philip Glass‘ Einstein on the Beach – a five-hour opera with no story and no interval? Well, it was about Einstein and he intrigues me. And it had ballet dancing. And it was a UK premiere. And if I hated, it I could always leave, right? And the MrMr really wanted to see it. And I thought it’d be an experience.

And an what an experience it was. While I’ll admit that I did sneak out one time, it was only to use the loo. Sure, the music was the same knife-jabbing repeats full of shrieking harmonic modulations, but somehow I didn’t feel the need to kill or maim. In fact, I didn’t want to budge from my seat at all.

The closest I’ve ever come to performance art – for this is how I would describe Einstein – was Daryl Hannah prancing about in a body stocking in Wall Street. I now feel ruined by this pathetic introduction, for immersion theatre, when it’s done like this, is nothing other than genius. I’ve never, ever seen anything like it. And, while I wouldn’t rush back to the theatre to see it again next week, in a couple of years time, I’d be the first in line to by a ticket.

The skill of this cast. The mastery of the incredibly challenging music. The non-stop dancing (like the innards of a mind at work). All I can say is see it. I’m still brimming with stun and awe. And it’s two days later. For once, I’m happy to be wrong.

Unfortunately, Einstein has finished its run in London now, but the tour isn’t over. They’re off to Toronto next.

Dame Viv lyrically waxes on all sorts. Her thoughts on trends and up-and-coming fashion designers, her love for Russian composers and Spanish artists, the environment, the Queen and so much more. I have more than 3,453,234,332,234,555.023 usable words for a 1,500-word feature. She guest edits the mag and designs a cover. I’m all swoony and hooked.

It’s last Friday. I’m at the Barbican. The London Symphony Orchestra is doing Stravinksy. During the intermission, Dame Viv brushes past me on the way to the bar. My heart jiggles. We chat. I mumble something akin to the above recollection. She looks at me blankly. She looks at me with kindness. She says my name and shakes my hand. As does Andreas, her beautifully hirsute and smiley husband. Just another writer to her. Just another seminal experience for me.

It’s today. I read over the interview that changed the course of my career. I choose my favourite pieces from the Vivienne Westwood‘s Anglomania SS12 collection and I share them with you. Here.
