diana vreeland vs japan: the approaching revolution

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be invited along to Soho House for a preview of fashion biopic Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel. I should be ashamed to say this, but I’m not. Although I’d heard her name spoken in hushed reverent tones by my well-educated friends, I didn’t really know anything more about her – apart from the fact that she’d edited American Vogue. Needless to say, she was so much more. Watch the film and you’ll see what I mean (I’ve included the trailer below).

For now, since it’s all about Japan here at the moment, I give you an editorial from her 16 October 1966 issue. Entitled ‘The Great Fur Caravan’, the spread was shot on location in the Japanese Alps by Richard Avedon and stars Veruschka. Classic, in every sense.

Thanks for posting this photo shoot; I had never seen it until it was mentioned in the film. Incredible. The ninth shot down, on the left, truly has “languor in the lips.” (See: Penelope Tree, same film.)
