trendwatch: smoking is (apparently) cool again

I had kids smoking last week. In the post, I mentioned that I’d noticed a bunch of cigarettes showing up in fashion editorials and today I thought I’d show you what I meant. I remember when cigarette ads were banned from magazines, so it’s a bit weird to see them popping up from the pages again. Did it all start with Kate Moss on the YSL catwalk a few years back? Is it the fashion industry trying to find a new way to shock us? I had a chat with a blogger friend about it recently and she reckoned it’s the new heroin chic. Whatever the reason, I’m not digging it. Cool? No. Naff? Definitely. What do you think? I’d love to know.

Definitely not cool, I just find it a bit sad. Cigarettes are more likely to give those beautiful women stinky breath, yellow teeth and cat’s bum mouths than make them look good.

But it’s funny you should post this today – on the day when Cancer Research UK launch their new campaign to stop the tobacco industry using the only marketing channel they have left – packaging. It’s mostly about the kids, actually – tobacco branding has a really strong effect on them and while removing it won’t stop everyone smoking, it will give millions of kids one less reason to start. And let’s not forget this is an addiction to a product that kills half of all long term users. There’s an awesome video they’ve made to support the campaign, check it out on their blog
