My third UK-based Aussie is none other than Briony Whitehouse. For those who work up in Westminster, you may know her as a senior political advisor. For those of you familiar with the London fashion scene, she’s the divine Miss B from A Girl, A Style – a blog where she shares her secret dreamworld. And it’s delicious.
Please, Miss B, tell us where are you from? A pretty leafy suburb in Adelaide, South Australia (I’ve still never found anywhere with nicer vineyards or whiter beaches).
Where do you live now? Cambridge, England. It’s my happy place of cobbled streets, ancient colleges and preppy students, grassy river banks and bike rides through country lanes.
Why did you come to the UK? Partly, to make the most of my British passport and see what life in England could be like. But mostly, for new opportunities, adventures, European travels and to see life from another perspective.
What to you miss most about Australia? The obvious things (my friends and family there), but also silly little things: endless summers and being able to waft about in white sundresses for months on end (but not the associated heat exhaustion and sunburn); Haighs chocolates, proper gelato, coffee, mangoes and juice bars; the relaxed, healthy and happy lifestyle; my favourite shops and Australian designers.
How often do you get back? So far I’ve only been back once, but I think I’ll aim to return for a holiday every two years (sadly, it’s a little too far to fly very often), but I’ll constantly drift there in my daydreams on grey, rainy English mornings.
What are your plans for Australia Day this year? I think a dose of St Tropez tan and some bright pink lipstick to make me feel more sunny will be a good start, followed by some of my favourite Australian tunes on the way to work (Kylie, The Temper Trap, Angus and Julia Stone). In the evening I’ll make a pavlova (it wouldn’t be Australia Day in my book without one) and have a drink with a few of my fellow expats in Cambridge (I promise you’ll never find me within a 100 meter radius of a Walkabout…). I’ve also just been sent some Cherry Ripes and Tim Tams by a dear friend back home (brown paper packages in the mail are the way to my heart) which I’ll happily work my way through.
