australian invasion: vanessa jackman, photographer

For those of you who might be unaware, it’s Australia Day on Thursday, so I thought now would be a great time to introduce some of my favourite UK-based compatriots, including friends and other people I cyberstalk.

Over the next few days, you can expect to meet a heap of a bunch of people who continue to wow me with their talent and unbridled creativity (there isn’t a pint-puller among them). I’ve quizzed them about home, what they miss, and how they plan to celebrate our national day over here. Expat Aussies, prepare to be homesick.

[who are you?] Vanessa Jackman

[where are you from?] I was born in Brisbane, but moved to Sydney in late 2002.

[where do you live now?] I moved to London in mid 2007. I love it here!

[What to you miss most about Australia?] Definitely my family and friends (love you guys!), the amazing weather, avocado and vegemite on sourdough or Turkish toast (not as odd as it sounds!), Glucojel jelly beans from the chemist (they are my most favourite jelly beans in the world and I have fond memories of being allowed them when I was ill as a child. They instantly make you feel better!), proper Aussie hamburgers with lashings of onions and slices of beetroot, swimming in Sydney Harbour and at Little Cove Beach in Noosa, Yalla chocolate mousse, dinner at Bistro Moncur in Woollahra, Bellini’s at Bambini Trust in Sydney, the sound of cicada’s in the trees on a hot summer’s day, the smell just after it has rained…..so many things. I love Australia!!

[How often do you get back?] I have only been back twice since we moved here. Once in 2010 and once late last year. I am hoping we will have a chance to go back again later this year.

[What are your plans for Australia Day this year?] I will be working on Australia Day but I will be sure to stock up on Twisties and Chico Babies at The Australia Shop in Covent Garden to munch on while I am editing. And we will be having a get together with Aussie friends on the weekend so a yummy roast lamb lunch with lots of lovely Penfolds wine will definitely be on the menu.

Here are some of Vanessa’s photos from a recent trip home. I can barely look at these without wanting to head straight for the airport. Beautiful.
