Last week during our chat, Diane Pernet said ‘I only wear black, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate colour.’ It’s a statement that I think designer Mary Katrantzou would more than agree with. I’ve seen Mary a couple of times, mostly from afar at fashion week or grinning from the pages of glossy magazines (the same tomes that continue to cooee her praises). And she, like Diane, always dresses in darker hues.
Mary’s sartorial choices, however, are vastly different to the clothing she makes for her collections – her pieces are struck amazing with a cacophony of colour and digital prints. Not only has this become her trademark, it has also earned her a sizeable celebrity following, including Anna Dello Russo and Hailee Steinfeld. It wasn’t until Tuesday evening at the inaugural MyDaily presents… event, however, that I had the opportunity to hear her speak and to get to know her better at the shindig afterwards.
For what seemed like the briefest of moments (although the talk went for over an hour), Mary sat in front of a room of full of rapt bloggers with MyDaily editor Libby Banks chatting about everything from the scaling of her prints to fit different body shapes to asking the audience what she should include on her website. Almost everything Mary said was quotable – and boy-o did we tweet about it. So, instead of trying to remember everything, I thought I’d get a little help from my friends.
