last, but never least

Back in mid-September, before the fashion week machine took over, my novel was yet to be polished off, and I got married, I was honoured to be invited to view designer Charlie May‘s Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

What a delight. I was totally hooked with the colour palette – neutrals, blacks, whites – the textures – hessian, cotton, chiffon, leather – and the garnishes – buckles, oversized zips and rows of gold studs. Delish.

What beautiful photos. What is that on the models’ arms, is it clay? Does it not dirty the clothing?

I knew from the moment I first met Charlie that she would be a success – and I hadn’t even yet seen her clothes. I asked what her work was like and she said something like ‘minimalist and neutral, with strong Ann Demeulemeester influence’ (I paraphrase) and I looked at this young recent St. Martins graduate and thought, wow.

It’s not just her talent – and the fact that I love her taste, colours, shape, vision. That alone isn’t enough to succeed in this tough, competitive industry. It is her focus, her dedication, her willing to work hard, really hard, and yet be consistently polite, kind, and remain modest.

I was sorry I couldn’t go to the show, so I’m extra grateful for this post: next best thing to being there.

I’m so glad you liked it, Jill. Truth is, I probably wouldn’t have been there if you hadn’t introduced me to Charlie back Feb. Thanks, again. xx
