Charlie May

Meet Charlie May, the extraordinary fashion designer and blogger. I was lucky enough to come across Miss May at a Next event on a freezing February day (Geri Halliwell was launching her swimwear line for the High Street retailer). She’s lovely, passionate, and as you’ll see from her photos, incredibly stylish and talented. I particularly love her customised Doc Martens and high-waisted pants with the pocket details. Delish.

Over to you, Charlie…

where are you from?
I’m originally from North Devon, then I moved to Bristol to study Fashion Design, and then London.

what do you do?
I’m a fashion designer specialising in womenswear and I also have a blog which started in 2008.

where do you do it?
I have a studio in my flat in East London.

why did you start the blog?
When I first started the Girl a La Mode I was in my second year of Uni. It was was a platform to share inspiration and also to talk about designers that I felt weren’t being talked about. Being a young fashion designer, I wanted the blogĀ to be covering other emerging artists. I definitely felt there was a niche for this.

Charlie May

what inspires you?
Travelling. My favourite city in the world is Antwerp, everything from the architecture to the fashion is so inspiring.

what’s next?
I’m focusing on getting a Dr Martens collaboration together. For my graduate collection I customised docs turning them into platforms; they’ve had an incredible response, now I just need some backing. I’m also designing my Spring/Summer 2012 collection so watch this space!
