you can’t fit a square peg in a round hole

I have a new project. A novel is not enough it seems for 2011. Later on this year, I’ll be working with my wonderful friend, the very talented Nadia Ackerman, on a book about her life.

For those of you who don’t know, we went to high school together on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. We were never friends during those years, but in 2008 we reconnected on Facebook and got to chatting. It didn’t take us long to discover that our lives had taken uncannily similar paths both before and after leaving the school gates.

The coincidences are too ubiquitous to list here, but one important area where we do cross over is in our commitment to forging a creative life. Nadia writes and sings songs that pull at your heart with a deep emotional resonance. She is also an illustrator and artist. My so-called talents lie in pictures and prose.

So, when Nadia confessed her plans for the book during my visit to New York last year, it quickly became an exciting project for both of us. We’re in the beginning stages at the moment – I’m finishing off my novel, while she reads her diaries and sifts through old photographs.

It’s not an easy task by any stretch – nobody wants to dredge up life’s painful memories or be reminded of past sartorial mistakes – so to help her on her way, Nadia has set up a blog. Follow it here to support her and watch our progress.

Wow… I’m playing her video now. She’s amazing. This song is going to just keep playing in my head now… deediliddlelee.. beautiful. Here’s a weird little coincidence: the ROCK she is on in that video, in Central Park.. that is MY ROCK. True story. I spent countless hours on that rock when I lived on East 69th Street.. probably more time in total than some people are alive.

I’m looking forward to following her blog too, to follow and support the book’s progress. What a lovely collaboration.
